Monday of spring break we started in Sequoia National Park. I have been wanting to visit this park for a while. It was as cool as we thought it would be. We all love the trees. I couldn't believe the distinct look of a sequoia tree. I was also shocked at how HUGE they are.
We started the morning off at hospital rock. It is a sacred place for Native Americans. They would bring their sick their and usually they died there. I don't have any pictures of that.
Then we made our way to the General Sherman Tree. This is the tree with the most volume in the world. It is not the tallest or the fattest but has the most volume. It is also dead so it will not get any taller, however it still gets fatter every year. Such interesting trees. Many of them are between 2000 and 3000 years old.
The General Sherman Trail was a mile out and back trail. 1/2 mile down to get to the tree and then a good cardio burner to get back to the car.
Then we went to the museum. My mom and Nancy checked the museum out while Virginia and I hiked Moro Rock. This is normally a pretty short walk because you drive right up to the rock. The road was closed and so we walked the 1.2 miles to the rock. We didn't know what it was we just wanted to hike. It was very cool and a must see in my opinion. It is a huge rock that has over 350 steps carved into it. They are steep and narrow.
You climb the steps to a lookout point. It allows you to see the High Sierra Nevada mountain range as well as the canyon. It was a gorgeous view.
After the rock we walked the 1.2 mile back to the car.
I still wanted to hike and so I did a little loop by the museum. I think it was the giant tree loop. Very flat and family friendly. there were lots of giant sequoias on the loop. It was beautiful.
After the loop hike we decided we were all tuckered out. We headed out of the park and stopped for ice cream and dinner before making our way back to our house. It was a great day!
